Commission: Raptor Siblings by LindseyWArt Commission: Raptor Siblings by LindseyWArt
Hey everyone, I have been a little busy but here is a little commission that I finished up recently for the awesome individual :iconsturmblut: which depicts his raptor character's, Sturmblut (Right), Windfeger (Left), and Starke Klaue (Back right).

If you want a similar piece of artwork be sure to ask, because I am always open for commissions.

Thank you all for looking and I hope you all enjoy!

Hmm, this is awesome. I like how strangly chunkier they are compared to other depictions of 'raptors (e.g. Jurassic Park).

Ha ha, I love feathered dinosaurs, but this was a specific request by  the commissioner. I must make them look like Jurassic Park raptors, and no feathers! Ha ha. :D

Anyways, thanks Hardvaro!

Nope, I have never painted a smilodon. This was just a commission, though I love dinosaurs I don't know how often I'll paint them. Maybe sometime soon. Thanks though! :)

really cool drawing ^_^ nice to see a version without feathers even though it isnt historically true :P my only criticism is the legs look a little short and stumpy but that might just be me. Lovely work on the background too i love the dirt texture and the landscaping :)

Yeah, that was by request of the commissioner, they are supposed to be based on Jurassic Park's raptors. The stumpy legs are kind of intentional, my thoughts were that they are still kind of young raptors (teenagers)  that are still growing up. Though I might have exaggerated that a little too much...oh well!

Glad you like it and thanks for all your kind words. :D

Really great work as usual! You are the queen at textures and you make it look so easy! One thing that still always amazes me is how paleo artists can just look at the bones and find out what the muscles look like. When drawing dinos do you look at bones and build its anatomy or do you find other paintings for reference?

LindseyWArt Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2014  Professional Digital Artist
Well, I do have some know how on where the muscles attach to the skeleton, so it helps me a ton to have that knowledge because I won't always have a reference to look at and copy for the pose I want. I also look at tons of anatomical illustrations to refresh my memory on anatomy and also real life pictures of birds and lizards to have some understanding on how the muscles and bones look with the skin on top. It gets pretty crazy, but overtime it all kind of just makes sense.

Where do you find your dinosaur muscle and skeleton references? From what I've seen I haven't found many good pictures online and the books I've read don't have skeletons or muscles but paintings of them, also I'm not near any museums.

Deviant art actually has a lot of good anatomy references for dinosaurs. Trust me, it has taken a while for me to gather all the references I need. Also, if you are trying to learn anatomy, try learning human anatomy and then moving on to dinosaur anatomy. It's funny, because even though there are a millions of species on earth, the anatomy stays relatively the same between them.

Thank you, Thats funny you say that, Sycra said a similar thing in one of his videos. I've tried doing a similar thing with animals, which helped but theirs not as much anatomy references for animals as I'd like. Especially compared to humans. We also share some reference photos. Though I'm still not a big fan of Deviant art's dino photos. I'll keep with working more with human anatomy.
Thank you for your advice!

This link may help you for animal references. There may not be a lot of online resources for anatomy, but there are plenty of books out there.

This book is one of the few good ones. Glad I could help out!

That book is the only one I've ever seen on animal anatomy. Thats sad there isn't that much published on this especially since how diverse animals are. I'll keep looking. Thank you!

Well there are a few good ones out there. This one is also a good one.

Though most of all of the content is mammal anatomy. I wish I could find a book that covers reptile and amphibian anatomy.
